Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by slowing down the growth of bacteria, this way treating the symptoms of many bacteria-induced conditions. It can be prescribed to prevent attacks of rheumatic fever, or prevent bacterial endocarditis. If you are allergic to this drug or you are also taking such medicines as astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, terfenadine it’s not recommended to use erythromycin. The combination can cause life-threatening rhythm disorders. Erythromycin comes in pills – they can be either delayed-release tablets or enteric-coated ones. Do not crush or break the tablets as their special coating is designed to protect the lining of your stomach.
This medicine has been reported to make skin more sensitive to sunlight. If you go out make sure you wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen with high sun protection factor (at least 15). Take erythromycin for as long as your doctor recommended, as feeling better does not mean all the bacteria have been eliminated. This drug should be taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water You can also take erythromycin with some milk or food if you get an upset stomach. Erythromycin is not expected to harm an unborn baby, but it passes into breast milk and can affect the health of a nursing baby.
